Why We're Playing

When I was just 4 years old they discovered I had kidney cancer. It’s called Wilms Tumor. At that time Chemo was still experimental and the survival rate was 1 in 5. Now with early detection and treatment it is much higher. I can’t imagine what my parents and sisters went through during that time.

When a child is sick, it not only affects the child but also brings unimaginable stress and pain to the family. Serious illness can mean endless days in treatment, hospital visits, and ongoing medical care, often without knowing the outcome. Treatment can go on for years, and the toll on families both financially and emotionally is enormous.

I picked Shining Stars specifically because we see what even a short break from the realities of this kind of hardship can do for a family. Whether it’s skiing for a day, fishing for trout, white water rafting, or, in this case, a little bit of pickleball, it serves as a bit of “normal” for families that are going through unthinkable hardships.

We are not out to cure, but to spread some light and happiness, albeit briefly, for kids and families that need it.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. Once reserved for older folks, it has gained traction in all age groups due to its accessibility and ease of learning. Our goal is that the participants in this tournament have such an excellent time and robust competition that they want to come back next year!

We hope the kids and families have a great time learning this sport, or just goofing around for a few hours, while we raise money for many more future events.

Serve up some good. Join us on the court.
